Hi Cristina! Thanks so much for sharing your story with us today! Can you please tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Cristina Driver and I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Bishop Arts District of Dallas, Texas. I have lived in Dallas for over 8 years as a project manager at a local architecture firm. When I am not managing retail projects, I enjoy spending time in my home studio sewing clothes and accessories. I also enjoy traveling as frequently as I am able, because I crave a fresh perspective to keep my creative juices flowing.
“Variety is the spice of life” is absolutely true! This past year has been a tough one. Can you share something good that has come out of this time?
During the pandemic when I was forced to work from home, I quickly had a change in lifestyle. I no longer felt exhausted after work, because I was no longer commuting and participating in regular social activities after work. Since I learned how to sew at a very young age, it became my hobby. Since I had nowhere to go during the pandemic and I felt the urge to utilize my skills of sewing, I began sewing as many face coverings as possible. I donated face coverings to neighbors, friends, coworkers and family. When masks were beginning to become more available, I was encouraged by my family and close friends to start my own business.
We love that Holaloha Designs started by giving back to your community! Tell us about your business-- what do you make and how long have you been doing it?
Holaloha Designs was started in the summer of 2020, mainly when face coverings were becoming more available and I wanted to branch away from making masks to newer items such as scarves, turbans, and headbands. In a holistic sense, I started the business to promote slow fashion, have a creative outlet, and help others elevate their style. I also think it’s important to celebrate and support local businesses, artists and designers because the products have more value and are unique. I have always envisioned myself as a local artist and feel very fortunate to be living the dream.
As a new entrepreneur, I enjoy the challenge and complex efforts of running a business. That includes all levels of designing, production, and marketing. I consider my work ethic to be very spontaneous and hands-on because I am constantly making new patterns and evolving various versions of a product.
Holaloha is a wordplay on the words “hola” and “aloha” – both meaning hello in different languages. I connect with these words because I often think an easy way to say hello to someone new is caused by the distraction and attraction of a bold, chic and fashionable accessory.
What a cool way to form connections through wearable art! Why did you get involved with MMC?
I was shopping in Bishop Arts during the 2019 holiday season, when I walked into MMC for the first time. I was so inspired by the shop’s concept and felt the urge to pursue an opportunity to become a local maker. Fast forward to the pandemic in 2020, I had time to develop various accessories and worked with Katy of MMC to get my approved product on the shelves. I was (and still am) so ecstatic to be part MMC!
And we are ecstatic that you’re a part of the collective! How has your work evolved over time?
The seasons and fabric selections drive the design ideas and inspiration. I gravitate to floral and classic prints such as dalmatian and leopard prints for my latest scarf designs.
Most recently, I was given the opportunity to sell my scarves in a Pop-Up during the neighborhood’s Bastille Day. I used that opportunity as a design challenge where I created 2 collections of 6 scarves that express the French countryside and Parisian city life.
When thinking about future products, I am trying to develop a unique piece that can express the essence of Bishop Arts. I am exploring with stained glass this winter and hope to develop small, one-of-a-kind ornaments.
We can’t wait to see your Bishop Arts-inspired piece! If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Spain, Morocco and Turkey are the next big countries I wish to visit. Mainly because I am inspired by their unique architecture, culture and traditions in textile design. When I visit a foreign country, I enjoy sightseeing, yet I strive to get involved with a local activity or craft taught by the local artisans, since I find it very insightful and inspirational.
We hope you make it to those countries soon. The inspiration you’re sure to find there will be fun to see in the products you create. Thanks so much for sharing Holaloha Designs with us today. We’re so thankful you’re a maker at Mosaic Makers Collective.
