You love the beautiful, bold scarves and jackets Cristina makes-- now she’s going to share her creative process. We can’t wait to learn SEW much about Holaloha Designs!
Hi Cristina! We’re so excited to go behind the scenes with Holaloha Designs today! Where do you find inspiration for your art?
I find inspiration through textiles/fabrics, colors, and nature.
Yes! Inspiration can be found all around. Do you plan for months before creating a new product, or do you create spontaneously?
Typically, my work has been part evolution of previous samples/products, and spontaneously developed in real-time.
There’s a lot of room for creativity in spontaneous design! Can you please walk us through a step-by-step process for creating your product?
Typically, I am a hands-on designer when it comes to making patterns, exploring design possibilities and altering the product until I am satisfied with the finished product. When it comes to creating my latest product, lightweight scarves, I develop a concept for a collection and execute it with fabrics and colors that I find trendy and inspirational. I love the process of making anything, so I document the stages through photography. I am also my own muse, and take photos of me wearing the product for promotion material.
We love the products you create. It’s clear that a lot of thought goes into making every product special. What does a typical day look like for you?
I am a full-time project manager for specialty retail projects at CallisonRTKL, a local architecture, landscape and interiors firm in Dallas. I enjoy working in the evenings and weekends at my home studio. It's really my time to have a creative outlet while unwinding from my day job.
We’re glad Holaloha allows you to unwind, while creating incredible pieces our shoppers love! Who’s the first person you show when you create a new piece?
Oftentimes I show my work through photos to my family.
It’s so great that you’re able to involve family members in what you do. We love sneak peeks! Can you let us in on any future products we can look forward to seeing on the shelves?
I am in the process of developing an exclusive, one-of-a-kind, collection of casual wear for women consisting of a lightweight short robe and wrap pants. I am also designing small colorful sun-catchers made from stained glass inspired by the Bishop Arts District.
