Today, we’re featuring our newest maker at Mosaic Makers Collective: Lane from Sugar Momma Scrubs. Her scrubs come in gorgeous scents like Constantinople (tobacco leaf, sandalwood, and vanilla), Hippie Chick (Lavender + Patchouli), and Clarity (Peppermint + Lavender). Her Enlightened series combines delicious-smelling scrubs with chakra stones, for good vibes from the inside out! We can’t wait to share Lane’s story and scrubs with you today!
Hi Lane! Thanks for sharing your story with us today. Can you tell everyone a little about yourself?
Hi everyone! I’m a native Texan (from Fort Worth) and a mom to one 12-year-old son, four dogs, and a cat (I tend to rescue everything that needs a helping hand). By day, I work in marketing for a medical device company. Sugar Momma Scrubs is my side business that occupies my evenings and weekends. My real name is Malana, which is Polynesian for “buoyancy”, but everyone calls me Lane. My favorite color is kelly green, I’m a huge fan of hot yoga, being outside and a lover of all genres of music (super eclectic taste – currently listening to Edie Brickell, an Oak Cliff native!). I also enjoy interior design, estate sales and collecting vinyl records.
It sounds like you’ve got a full house and some really fun hobbies! What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. My grandfather, my mom, my dad and my sister have all started their own companies from the ground up. My grandfather always told me to work hard, stay humble and be kind in order to succeed. That advice has never failed me, even in tough times.
Your grandfather sounds like a wise man! That’s great advice! Tell us about Sugar Momma Scrubs! What do you make and how long have you been doing it?
My business is Sugar Momma Scrubs. The name was born as a humorous nod to me being a single momma and also one of the key ingredients – sugar – in the products.
My enneagram is # 2 (The Helper), which fits perfectly with my little side business, which was founded out of a need to help my then Pre-K aged son find relief from chronic and severe eczema. Having worked in the dermatology field for a decade and visiting multiple specialists, we were out of luck in finding something to help with his sensitive skin. After a few failed homeopathic experiments, I finally landed on the formula that is now the base of every one of our 19 scrubs. I made them for my son only until 4 years ago when, at the suggestion of friends and family, I brought them to my first pop-up market. It fills me with total joy to hear people say it has helped them too. Whether your skin is perfectly normal or sensitive, these scrubs can exfoliate and moisturize, 2 in 1!
We’re so glad you were able to create a product that’s given your son relief, and that you decided to share it with the world! Why did you get involved with MMC?
As a maker, it’s difficult to find outlets that truly appreciate and cultivate handmade products. In a world of mass production, it can be a real challenge for a handcrafted product to compete, but the result of handmade work is always higher quality, in my opinion, and also filled with love that you won’t find in factory-produced goods. I was thrilled to discover MMC and the incredible and diverse talent in each maker featured there. Bishop Arts District is such a cool spot too and one I naturally gravitate to when I visit Dallas from my hometown of Fort Worth. MMC was a no-brainer for me to apply to and I’m honored to be featured along with so many talented makers.
We’re so thankful you’ve joined our community! What is the most memorable response you’ve had to your work?
Repeat customers are always a joy because it means they really LOVE your product. I’ve been blessed to establish a healthy base of repeat customers in the past 4 years. The most memorable feedback I ever received came from a woman who had long suffered with psoriasis, a skin disease that causes hard, scaly patches to form chronically on the skin. It causes embarrassment and frustration. She told me that after using my product, her skin felt soft and presentable for the first time in over a decade and that she was so grateful for the product making an impact on her life. Happy tears came as I read that and felt true joy in being able to help someone. My products are suitable for even the most sensitive skin, but also have benefits for normal skin that just wants to be pampered.
What a beautiful story! It must feel so great to know you’re really making a difference in the lives of your clients! One last question: What’s the most recent show you binged on Netflix?
The Good Place with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson! It’s a lighthearted and fun show that brings a lot of laughs. I don’t watch a ton of tv, but when I find a show I love, binge mode ensues! Other Netflix binge-worthy favorites include Emily in Paris, Call My Agent and of course, the beloved Schitt’s Creek. I’m sure David and I would be BFFs in real life. 🙂
Those are some of my favorite shows, too. David is the very best! Thanks so much for sharing your story with us today. We’re so glad you’re a part of the Mosaic Makers Collective!
