Today we’re continuing our Meet the Maker series with Jennifer Smith of Dotted Line Studio. We love her feminine, floral style of greeting cards and stickers, and her No Rain, No Flowers sweatshirt and pin are a welcome reminder this very “rainy” year. We’re excited to learn more about Jennifer and her business and share Dotted Line Studio with you!
Hi Jennifer! Thanks for telling us your story today! First, can you please tell everyone a little about yourself?
I’m a former corporate gal turned business-owner who specializes in graphic design, illustration, and stationery/gift goods. I’ve always had a passion for printing techniques and have REALLY been getting into block printing lately… making prints, tea towels, scarves, and more! I’m also a mom to two amazing twin girls (2 years old!) so life stays busy around here!
We can’t wait to see all the new block printing products you come up with! 2020 has been a tough year. Can you share something good that has come out of this time?
I started this business to be able to spend more time with my young twins. While I never expected to spend THIS much time with them, I certainly got my wish this year! 🤣
More time with your little ones is definitely a good thing to come out of the craziness that is 2020! We’d love to learn more about your business. What do you make and how long have you been doing it?
My business is Dotted Line Studio and I offer design services such as branding and art licensing. I also have a small product line of paper goods, apparel, and home gift items. I’ve only been “official” in this business for about a year but I love it!!
We’re so glad you took the leap to become “official”! What are you most proud of?
When I started this business a year ago and left my corporate job, I had 1-year-old twins and only worked on the business part-time. A couple months later the pandemic hit and the business took a backseat for several months. But in all of this, I’ve still managed to get my products into two local stores and win a couple design competitions with major companies! So I’m pretty proud of myself for accomplishing that given all of the challenges in the last year.
Congratulations! Even without the challenges 2020 threw at us, those are huge accomplishments! What advice would you give a young artist?
Stick with it and remember it takes time to find your style, strengths, and passions. The work I’m doing now is so different (and better, I think… 😂) than when I started just two years ago. And you’re never really done growing and changing. It takes a long time of trial and error and practice before you find yourself in a place that feels like your work is “you.”
That’s great advice! Thanks for sharing! Aside from visiting MMC, what’s your favorite thing to do in Bishop Arts District?
Indulge at Emporium Pies. I have a MAJOR sweet tooth 🙈🥧
Same!! The sweet tooth is real! Thanks so much for sharing the story of Dotted Line Studio with us! We’re so glad to have you as part of the Mosaic Makers Collective!
